D. The history of religious liberty in America (Part Two, Section IV of God Betrayed/Separation of Church and State: The Biblical Principles and the American Application,  “History of Religious Freedom in America”):

6kirf14uOur Baptist forefathers stood in times of severe persecution. They did not deny their faith to get out of being persecuted. They “suffered persecution.” As a result of the stand of our Baptist foretathers, Americans, to this point, have enjoyed religious freedom, as well as freedom of speech, press, assembly, and the right to petition the civil government for a redress of grievances. In other words,Americans owe their First Amendment to the United States Constitution (pictured above) to the Baptists. The question for believers is, are we ready to suffer persecution if that is the price of standing for Christ? The question is important because, from all appearances, the time may soon come when believers may have to choose between suffering or denial of Christ. “Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution” (2 Timothy 3:12).

  1. Introduction to “The History of Religious Freedom in America (Section IV, Chapter 1 of God Betrayed)
  2. Secular and Christian revisionism (Section IV, Chapter 2 of God Betrayed)
  3. The consequences of secular and Christian revisionism (Section IV, Chapter 3 of God Betrayed)
  4. The light begins to shine (Section IV, Chapter 4 of God Betrayed)
  5. The Pilgrims and the Puritans in Massachusetts (Section IV, Chapter 5 of God Betrayed). The Congregationalists (Puritans) brutally beatObadiah Holmes for his beliefs. Beating of Obadiah HolmesHolmes said of his beating: “As the man began to lay the strokes upon my back, I said to the people, though my flesh should fail, yet God will not fail: so it pleased the Lord to come in, and fill my heart and tongue as a vessel full, and with audible voice I break forth, praying the Lord not to lay this sin to their charge, and telling the people I found He did not fail me, and therefore now I should trust Him forever who failed me not: for in truth, as the strokes fell upon me, I had such a spiritual manifestation of God’s presence as I never had before, and the outward pain was so removed from me that I could well bear it, yea, in a manner felt it not, although it was grievous.” When he was released from the post, he said to the magistrates, “Ye have beaten me as with roses.” He was another Baptist hero whose sufferings contributed to the adoption of the First Amendment to the United States Constitution.

These documents and the history surrounding them are chronicled in Section IV, Chapter 6 of Jerald Finney’s book, God Betrayed which is reproduced in the above article, The Baptists of Rhode Island. Rhode Island showed us the way to draft its legal documents in such a way as to explicitly establish a government under Jesus Christ while honoring the biblical principle of separation of church and state (also called religious liberty, soul liberty, and freedom of conscience).
  7. The Separates and the Baptists in New England (Section IV, Chapter 7 of God Betrayed)
  8. From New England to the South (Section IV, Chapter 8 of God Betrayed). Photo of Shubal Stearns preaching at Sandy Creek, North Carolina follows. His preaching led to a great revival whichShubal Stearns resulted in the planting of untold numbers of Baptist churches throughout the south.

“The History of the First Amendment”

010610 An Abridged History of the First Amendment. Since this topic is so vast, this article is longer than most articles on this blog—21 single spaced pages, excluding endnotes (not so long considering the wealth of information distilled on this vital subject). Sadly, very few Christians know the facts presented in this history. Tragically, few Christians want to know it. To fully understand the issue of separation of church  and state, one must have knowledge of the history of the First Amendment.

UnionOfChurchAndStateSome have called God Betrayed: Separation of Church and State/The Biblical Principles and the American Application the encyclopedia of information on the issue of separation of church and state. For one who has some concept of the biblical principles involved, the author was encouraged to write Separation of Church and State: God’s Churches: Spiritual or Legal Entities?, a book which gets to the church issues of incorporation, 501(c)(3), how a church may utilize property without becoming a legal entity, etc. much more succinctly. Churches under Christ Ministry Website: Understanding and Applying God's Principles for Church Headship "Would to God ye could bear with me a little in my folly: and indeed bear with me. For I am jealous over you with godly jealousy: for I have espoused you to one husband, that I may present you as a chaste virgin to Christ. But I fear, lest by any means, as the serpent beguiled Eve through his subtilty, so your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ" (2 Corinthians 11:1-3). ————————————This Ministry is under the authority of Charity Baptist Tabernacle of Amarillo, Texas. Jerald Finney, a Christian Lawyer and member of Charity Baptist Tabernacle, having received this ministry in the Lord, explains how a church in America can remain under the Lord Jesus Christ and Him only. "As every man hath received the gift, even so minister the same one to another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God. If any man speak, let him speak as the oracles of God; if any man minister, let him do it as of the ability which God giveth: that God in all things may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom be praise and dominion for ever and ever. Amen" (1 Peter 4:10-11; See also, Ephesians 4::1-16 and 1 Corinthians 12:1-25). "Take heed to the ministry which thou hast received in the Lord, that thou fulfil it" (Colossians 4:17). "And hath put all things under his feet, and gave him to be the head over all things to the church" (Ephesians 1.22; See also, e.g. Colossians 1:18).
